On the 1st June 2018 I facilitated my “Inclusive Language for an Inclusive Workplace” workshop for the leaders of Arup’s Sydney Office.
The purpose of the workshop was to equip leaders with new knowledge and reflective prompts to make their language more inclusive. They will then take what they learnt and works with their team to establish an acceptable (inclusive) standard of behaviour and language. There is no silver bullet, but language is an important and crucial step in creating inclusive environments – one discussion at a time.
We covered everyday-gendered language, the Gender Unicorn, and inclusive pronouns for those who identify as non-binary – as one participant said, “One hour in never enough” – too true!
